Farringtons School
Project: Science Block Extension
Client: The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham
Location: Chislehurst, London
Completion Date: April 2016
BHM were appointed after a competition to undertake the School’s masterplan which highlighted that the science and mathematics teaching facilities were under-provided for. The conclusion was to extend the existing science building and add a new first floor over the entire footprint.
The extension was designed using construction techniques to allow the removal of the existing roof and south gable and installation of the first floor plate during the eight-week summer holiday. The rest of the works could then continue while the School occupied the ground floor for teaching in September. This negated the need for costly temporary accommodation.
The new first floor extension provided a new science laboratory and five classrooms, a staff office, accessible WC facilities and lift. The reconfigured ground floor provided a large prep room and chemicals store.
