Mill Hill School
Project: New Classroom Block
Client: Mill Hill School
Location: London
Nestled between the Grade II listed school chapel and main school buildings, the new Favell Building is linked to the latter by a glazed bridge. Additionally, work has been done to the adjacent Listed Buildings, as well as extensive landscaping surrounding the site.
The design response was to create an atrium building with a wedge-shaped plan form, which has the effect of minimising the front elevation to the Ridgeway and maximising that to the Quadrangle at the rear. The new building has a distinctive gullwing roof in contrast to the adjacent Listed Buildings
The Facing material chosen for the formal front and rear elevations was a cast stone masonry block, with an acid-etched sandstone finish. Two glazed bridges form the linkage between the new building and the adjacent Marnham building.
The interior of the Fav ell Building comprises a dramatic three-storey atrium finished in white and featuring structural glass balustrading. The classrooms and offices are designed to benefit from natural light without glare.
