Royal Russell School

Project: New Student Accommodation Buildings

Client: Royal Russell School

Location: East Croydon

BHM completed two boarding houses at Royal Russell School for boys and girls - each providing 84 bed spaces for boarding pupils.

The accommodation had to offer ‘home from home’ facilities at a high level of comfort - TV and games rooms, kitchen and dining areas, onsite laundry, shower rooms and washrooms. Younger students have three and four-bed dorms, while the older students are in two-bed rooms and single en-suites. The ground floors accommodate function rooms, quiet study, tutorial spaces and social areas for all sixth-form students to encourage the social mixing of boarding and non-boarding students. There are also external terraces and balconies for use by the pupils and a landscaped courtyard.

Support facilities include two house master staff houses and multiple flats for their assistants and matron. Each flat has its own garden or terrace and office.

The School’s new medical centre is also now housed in the newest building, comprising of a reception/waiting room, three sick wards with accessible showering and bathing facilities, isolation wards and doctor and councillor rooms.
