The King's School

Project: New Sports Pavillion

Client: The King’s School

Location: Canterbury

BH&M won a limited competition to design a new Sports Pavilion at Birley's Field, for the School. The new building replaces the existing sports pavilion built in the 1930s, which had become too small to provide changing rooms for all the students using the sports facilities. In addition, the School needed to provide high-quality clubroom facilities for both the students/visiting teams and parents watching events.

The contemporary building has a curved roof which sweeps down, creating an entrance canopy on the ground floor and forming a covered area for the viewing balcony on the first floor. A large entrance space gives access to the new pavilion which provides eight changing rooms, one accessible, and two staff changing rooms. On the first floor, there is a large clubroom served by a commercial kitchen with a licensed bar and toilets.
